Women’s Services

Women have unique needs in their medical care—including the surroundings in care facilities dedicated to women’s health services. To accommodate to the special needs of women in the Okeechobee community, Raulerson Hospital has established welcoming and comfortable facilities where women can find the screenings and advanced treatments they need to stay healthy at any age. Our screening procedures are accredited by the American College of Radiology with individual accreditations for five distinct imaging modalities: Computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Ultrasound, Mammography, and Nuclear Medicine.

Key Screenings for Women

Some of the most prevalent conditions among women such as breast cancer, gynecological cancers, and osteoporosis may be managed with the right screenings that can detect these conditions early on when treatment is most effective. The screening procedures below may reveal the early signs of potentially harmful conditions before symptoms ever arise, allowing women to take a more preventive approach to their care.

  • Pelvic Exams – Sexually active women over the age of 18 are generally advised to have pelvic exams once every three years, provided that an exam has never revealed abnormal results. During pelvic exams, gynecologists may diagnose the early development of cervical cancer, certain STDs, and other conditions that may affect reproductive health in women. Pelvic exams may also coincide with clinical breast exams.
  • Digital Mammography – At the age of 40, breast cancer screening becomes more detailed with digital mammograms that take pictures of the breast tissue. During a mammogram, abnormal lesions may be pinpointed for further testing with MRI and biopsy procedures to determine if cancer is present. Digital mammography provides the most comfort for women during this procedure with the clearest possible images for increased accuracy in screening.
  • Bone Density Testing – Women are at a much higher risk than men for osteoporosis, or loss of bone density. The DEXA Scan procedure can identify bone density loss in women before injuries like fractures take place. Osteoporosis cannot be reversed, but its progression can be slowed with the right diagnostic and interventional care.
